Dr inż. Bartłomiej Zieniuk received the Special Award of the President of the Patent Office of the Republic of Poland
Dr inż. dr inż. Bartłomiej Zieniuk for the patent “Method of producing microbial oil with a high content of omega-3 acids” he received the Special Award of the President of the Patent Office of the Republic of Poland in the 12th edition of the National Student-Inventor Competition.
What is the project about?
Yarrowia lipolytica yeast is one of the best-studied “unconventional” yeasts with the ability to synthesize valuable metabolites. An interesting property of these yeasts is the accumulation of oil in the cells under specific culture conditions, where control and optimization of the process allows to obtain a favorable composition of fatty acids.
The subject of the invention is a method of producing microbial oil with a high content of polyunsaturated fatty acids, e.g. eicosapentaenoic and docosahexaenoic acids with Y. lipolytica. An important aspect of the invention is the simultaneous management of waste oil after the fish smoking process. Utilization of lipid substances in sewage treatment plants can be burdensome, and an alternative possibility of waste management may be their use in the microbial synthesis of intracellular fat. In addition, the use of waste as substrates for breeding allows you to reduce the cost of obtaining biomass and metabolites.
